Tasha Smith | The Main Character
Share
You can’t talk about self-made women in Hollywood without bringing up Tasha Smith. Tasha has always had the kind of spirit that could fill a screen. The kind of personality that makes you rewind a scene. The kind of person who can turn a supporting role into a main character. Her voice, her facial expressions, her emotional intensity. Tasha’s bold, animated delivery made her stand out naturally. Even when she was working her way up in Hollywood, you could tell she wasn’t meant to blend in. She was meant to be remembered. Acting, directing, mentoring, producing, she never stayed stuck in one box, and that’s exactly why she’s still winning today.
Tasha started in entertainment at a young age, working steadily in television and film while learning the business from the inside out.
While she had been building her résumé for years in television and film, her first major breakout moment for many audiences came in ATL. That role had people quoting her lines, replaying scenes, and recognizing that she brought something electric to the screen. She didn’t just play characters; she embodied them. Her delivery felt real, raw, and just dramatic enough to make you laugh while still feeling the weight of what she was saying.
Another one of Tasha’s most talked about roles came in Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too. The movies sparked real conversations about marriage, friendship, and emotional damage. Tasha, of course, delivered a performance that was real, emotional, and unapologetic. It felt familiar to a lot of women, especially Black women trying to navigate love, commitment, and self worth, all while trying to hold everything together.
While those roles stand out, they’re just part of a much bigger body of work. Tasha has consistently shown up across film and television, proving her range. In film, she’s appeared in The Whole Ten Yards, Daddy’s Little Girls, The Longshots, Couples Retreat, Jumping the Broom, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and The Deliverance. On television, audiences have seen her in favorites like Girlfriends, All of Us, Meet the Browns, For Better or Worse, First Wives Club and Empire.
Tasha always shows up with realness, comedy, and relatability, building characters so naturally you catch yourself asking, is she acting or just being her?
One of the greatest things about Tasha is that she didn’t gatekeep her abilities and decided instead to help others. Through the Tasha Smith Actors Workshop, she has mentored and trained countless actors, helping them develop emotional access, discipline, and confidence. Many performers credit her for sharpening their craft and pushing them beyond surface level acting. Her impact extends well beyond her own credits.
Tasha has built an entirely new lane for herself as a director and producer, and she’s been moving quietly but powerfully behind the scenes. She’s had her hands on some of the most talked about television shows and films, from STAR, P-Valley, and Black Lightning to BMF, Bel-Air, Harlem, The Equalizer, and The Rookie. Her catalog behind the camera is just as impressive as what we’ve seen on screen. That list doesn’t even scratch the surface of what she has been a part of. What makes it exciting is knowing she’s still creating, still growing, and still adding new chapters.
You can now catch Tasha on Survival of the Thickest, streaming on Netflix, with the show approaching its third season. She’s also announced that she’s working on additional Netflix projects, with more to come in the near future.
The road wasn’t easy for Tasha, and she’s never pretended that it was. She’s been open about getting no’s in the industry, struggling with confidence, and needing time to fully grow into the woman she is today. Her journey wasn’t overnight. It took seasons of doubt, learning, and self work to get there. She’s said herself that it took her a while to gain her wings and feel confident enough to fly, and honestly, we’re all glad she finally took off.
Now, after 50, Tasha says she’s living in her best season, and it shows. With age came wisdom, clarity, and freedom. She’s walking fully in her purpose and creating space for others.
Thank you, Tasha, for everything you continue to give to this industry. We’re rooting for you, celebrating you, and looking forward to even more success ahead.
